What Are the Benefits of a Metal Roof and Should I Get One?

If you’re looking at roofing options for your project, metal roofing is well worth consideration. Metal roofs are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. Metal roofs offer many benefits, from durability to weather resistance to aesthetics. There are also a wide variety of color and style options available so you can truly personalize the roof to fit the look you’re going for. If you’re building a new home or looking to update your existing roof, metal roofings can be a great option. So what are the benefits of a metal roof?

Longevity

Metal roofs are strong and durable. They will need to be replaced far less frequently than asphalt. Generally asphalt will last up to 20 years, while metal roofs will carry a manufacturers’ warranty of roughly 30-50 years and will often last much much longer. Thanks to the material’s durability, it will be able to withstand the elements and the test of time without corroding or cracking. Rust-proof coatings and protection also help add to the longevity, which will save you from costly repair bills and replacement. In fact, in the long run metal roofs often end up being the more cost-effective option due to this longevity.

Weather Resistance

One of the biggest benefits of a metal roof is the fact that they are highly weather resistant and able to stand up to intense weather conditions in a way that asphalt and other roof options simply aren’t able to. Metal roofs will keep their structural integrity during strong winds, hail, and ice storms. Meanwhile, metal roofs are also fire resistant and will reflect solar heat during the intense summer months. We sometimes get asked “are metal roofs cooler than shingles?” The answer is yes, definitely! Asphalt will absorb the heat into the home, while metal will reflect it back out and keep your home cool— while also contributing to energy efficiency. Asphalt can also be prone to mildew or mold from moisture build-up in a way that metal roofing is not. Metal can generally hold up to many conditions, so while you might get a few dents from a major hail storm, your metal roof will keep its structural integrity against extreme elements.

Aesthetics

Metal roofing can be painted and repainted, meaning you have the benefit of being able to choose the metal roof color that matches the style and aesthetics of your building. There are a lot of options to choose from, especially when you also factor in the actual roofing style, shape, and things like textured metal and exposed or concealed fasteners. While there are a few color options to choose from for asphalt roofs, one of the great benefits of a metal roof is the sheer volume of colors and styles you can choose from. Before you dive too deep into choosing your ideal color, though, it’s worth noting that there may be color restrictions or limits on installing metal roofs where your home is, so it pays to check with your municipality before you make any decisions or investments.

Noise

One of the biggest questions people have around metal roofs vs shingles is “are metal roofs loud?” The good news is that— despite the common misconception— metal roofs are not loud. In fact, they can even be quieter than shingles. Metal roofs are great at protecting from noise pollution, and you can add insulation boards and upgrades to dampen any noise that comes with heavy rain or hail. It’s worth speaking to a metal roofing expert to find the best solution for your project.
